Leighton Contractors select Active Risk Manager from Strategic Thought to drive enterprise-wide risk management

20 May 2009

Strategic Thought Group plc, provider of enterprise risk management software Active Risk Manager, today announced that Leighton Contractors have implemented Active Risk Manager (ARM) to provide standardisation and increased consistency across the organisation.

For over 55 years Leighton Contractors have provided services to governments, major corporations and other clients across Australia, delivery projects that create lasting value for future generations. With capabilities spanning resources, construction, telecommunications, industrial engineering, energy, infrastructure and facility management, Leighton Contractors’ current project list includes the construction of the $2 billion North-South Bypass Tunnel and the $1.4 billion Gateway Project in Brisbane. They also provide a range of mining services to BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto throughout Australia.

Prior to implementing Active Risk Manager, Leighton Contractors used a complex system to manage risk based on a series of spreadsheets that had the potential to lead to different risk management processes being adopted by the Company. A number of different solutions were considered over a period of several months, varying from standalone management tools to alternative enterprise risk management packages, before ARM was selected.
Karl Davey, Manager, Risk Management, Group Operational Services at Leighton Contractors said, “Active Risk Manager was chosen because of its complete Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) capabilities, easy to use graphical interface and its analysis capabilities. We were also reassured by Strategic Thought’s extensive client list of large global companies and the reliability of the product. Strategic Thought’s experience in providing a consultancy-led approach to an ERM roll out was also very important and this has proved invaluable.”

Karl Davey continued, “ARM was chosen as the engine to drive our standardised risk management process and to enable us to increase consistency across the business. We now have the visibility we need to understand the risks we are facing so we can become focused on the prevention of issues and ensure we realise our opportunities. By improving our risk management processes we are better positioned to achieve long term sustainable business practices and success for all our stakeholders. There are very few parts of the business that ARM does not touch.”
Active Risk Manager is a web-based Enterprise Risk Management system. ARM enables the identification, assessment, communication, analysis and management of risks and opportunities. ARM aids compliance with project, operational and enterprise-wide guidelines.

Martin Metcalf, CEO of Strategic Thought Group concluded, “This project is significant because of the size and scope of the undertaking. Leighton Contractors are using ARM across the breadth of their ERM processes including, opportunities and bid management, crisis and reputation management, IT risk and compliance, risk adjusted business planning, supply chain risk management and auditing and external reporting. By doing this Leighton Contractors are making good use of every aspect of ERM and certainly illustrating the strength and depth of Active Risk Manager.”
